When to use a Clarifying Shampoo?

Sometimes as Hairdressers, we take for granted our knowledge of all things hair.

So we’re going to trickle out the not so obvious for those that don’t eat, sleep & breathe hair…

What is a Clarifying Shampoo?

When do you use it?

Why?

Think of a Clarifying Shampoo as you would an exfoliator for the skin. Clarifying shampoo goes into the hair and removes build up, be that product or excess oil from your hair. When this has been done, your normal shampoo can get in there and nourish your tresses.

Just like the skin, if you have lots of dead skin cells (ie a barrier) then the next step, say a moisturizer cannot penetrate to treat. Clarifying shampoos work the same way. If you have a build up on your hair eg silicone, waxy products etc, then nothing else you put on your hair will work effectively.

Whilst Clarifying shampoo are important, do be careful to not overuse as you can run the risk of stripping your hair or your hair being too squeaky clean! Average is once every 2 – 4 weeks.

On the other hand, they are fantastic for blondes if you’ve been exposed to really hard water, it’s great to start with a Clarifying shampoo, do a second shampoo with your Blonde/Violet shampoo & follow with a Treatment – your hair will Thank you for it!
